Cairo,
known as the 'City of Minarets' is a must on any
visit to Egypt. Cairo is a colourful bustling
city, with a blend of ancient and modern, with
excellent bars, an incredible selection of
shopping, leisure, culture and nightlife. Cairo
comes alive at night, which is the best time to
shop, eat delicious Middle Eastern cuisine, or
simply watch the world go by from a pavement
cafe. You can dine in a floating restaurant on
the Nile, sample an apple-flavored shisha
waterpipe at a coffee-shop or see oriental
dancers and cabarets at a luxury hotel.
Cairo's long journey across history started more than four millennia ago. The city assumed various names: Memphis, Heliopolis, Babylon-in-Egypt, Al-Fustat, Al-Qatta'i, Al-Askar, and most recently, Al-Qahira (Cairo).
Today, Greater Cairo encompasses various historic towns and modern districts into one of the most populous cities in the world. Cairo is Africa's most populous city and the Arab world's cultural centre. Since the 19th century Cairo has also become a center for tourism as people from around the world have come to see the monuments and artifacts of Ancient Egypt, especially the Pyramids. |
