Many modern guides to Marsa Alam describe it as a fishing village on Egypt's Red Sea coast 132km (82mi) from Al-Quseir. However, with a new international airport, a number of other planed tourism projects and many new hotels, it is rapidly becoming much more than a fishing village.
Marsa Alam sits on the T-junction between the Red Sea coast road and the road from Edfu which sits on the Nile river about 230km (142mi) inland. This road, which was probably originally built by Ptolemy II in the Greek period, passes through some historic landscape where the ancient Egyptians mined much of their gold. Several gold mining operations are known. Just off this road are found two areas, called Wadi Barmiya, and about about 30 kilometers further into the mountains. Wadi Baramiya extends into another larger Wadi named Miya, where a temple was built by, among others, Seti I. Both areas were probably gold mining communities.
The desert is Deeply silent, and empty. Majestic in its simplicity.
The sea with its crystal clear, blue water, its fertile, beautiful marine life, is remarkable unpolluted place. In Marsa Alam, many excursions can be done to some outstanding sights. |
Wadi el Gemal National Park
Shortly to the south , the a amazing Wadi el Gemal National Park which is one of the most great recent additions to the number of parks and the most protected areas of the Red Sea lies. IT has a very well organized CENTER , offering guided tours of the park with camel or by foot.
It's considered as an educational and terrific experience learning about the Beja tribes, geography, and a sunset camel ride!
The habitat of the Wadi El-Gemal National Park mirrors that of South Sinai and is ideal. A number of mammal and bird species are found in both areas not least the Nubian ibex, striped hyena, hyrax, the aforementioned dorcas gazelle, Lammergeier and Lichtenstein’s sandgrouse and, perhaps most importantly, the golden spiny mouse, a probable prey species for this enigmatic little fox. It would be a fine addition to what is already a spectacularly beautiful and important corner of Egypt. |
| The area of Marsa Alam is a place rich in historical sites and natural beauty. |
